There are literally thousands of granite color choices, which makes it the much preferred choice for countertop material in kitchens and bathrooms. Most granite slabs though fall into a dozen or so colors/variations that give them their common name.
The truly exotic finds made by miners and entrepreneurs who go out and look for them all over the world are usually given exotic names, and are always expensive. But the WOW factor is worth the price to many buyers.
The common names for a general pattern and colors are recognized universally for the most part. However, many big box stores will take a very common granite species and give it their own name. They do this to try to keep you from finding the same exact color at a local yard that a contractor uses so you can compare the price.
This is strictly a marketing technique to make their product look exclusive. Do your homework and use an experienced general contractor if you don't want to play this little marketing game.
