If you've had any exposure to trades people at all, you've probably noticed that they are often rough around the edges. If you heard the way some contractors deal with each other, you might even get a case of culture shock.
Some contractors even fit the stereotype of the gruff and brash guy in the tank top who is good at swinging a hammer but lacking in social skills. Sometimes what would seem like a brawl is about to take place is “just a normal day at the office” in the minds of contractors interacting with each other.
However, although certain forms of conduct and language may be acceptable among some contractors, I'm still amazed at the lack of restraint that happens in homes these people are working on.
The bottom line is, there is NO EXCUSE for not respecting your dominion in your home. At least that's my personal position even if not every contractor is as respectful. And I choose my subcontractors based on this policy.
When we are in your home, there is a strict code of conduct that I require to remain a subcontractor for my company. This includes not just language being used, but things like no smoking any closer to your home than the street.
You should never be made uncomfortable in your own home due to the actions of workers. That's a policy I take very seriously. When you are interviewing potential remodeling contractors, you may want to ask about their policy on employee conduct. Also be sure to call your project manager about any concern you have. That's something they need to know about.
