The reason we know this problem is so common is because of the increase in calls we have been getting. Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) bulbs are the spiral alternative, pictured above, to conventional bulbs used to save energy and yield a longer life span. The problem is, they don't always work with dimmer switches.

The wrong CFL bulbs will result in bulbs not dimming or only dimming slightly, then simply turning off as you try to dim them. Sometimes you may even get a “hum” in the dimmer switch. The solution is to buy CFL bulbs that are labeled as “dimmable.” CFL bulbs not specifically labeled “dimmable” will not work properly with dimmers.

The good news is, if you call us with these types of problems, we will assess the problem as best we can over the phone before setting up a service call. We have on many occasions saved homeowners money by identifying the problem before spending a dime with us, and we're glad to do that.

It's true that the “dimmable” CFL bulbs cost a bit more than regular ones, but it's less than an unnecessary service call. We'll be available when you really need us.
